Analysts are now reporting that mobile identifier services, those that use information linked to mobile SIM cards to verify an individual’s identity, will be in use by 40 per cent of the world’s population in five years. While this will have a profound impact on identity verification, mobile authentication is already in use for the verification of a variety of accounts and transactions in Canada. A telco joint venture has enabled efficient access to over 90 per cent of Canada’s mobile subscribers for the authentication of devices and account holders. This service will become more significant as mobile devices are used to enable real time payments and control mission critical applications. This presentation provides an overview of the status and future prospects of mobile identification in Canada.
